I love Lil’ Kim. “Hold On,” pulls at my heart strings. I love her style. I love the way she flows. Her words have this power to them, a strength that sings of sexual liberation and royalty—not inherited, but earned. She had my respect, she has my interest, she has my love.
But then there’s Nicki. I love Nicki Minaj. If she has a verse on someone’s song, it’s almost always better than the rest of the song (in my opinion). I appreciate her weird “thousands of personalities” shtick. Even though her actual songs of late (Pink Friday) seem like they’re trying to hard to subvert the female rapper image, I still like a few of them, and I still like her.
And then there’s this ridiculous feud. All this sniping and fighting, and then Kim has to go and release a whole mix tape about the shit. It’s like her whole life is this, now. And I’m torn between two artists that I appreciate in very different ways.
What’s a boy to do?
